There are several ways to prevent clogs in the home. Whether they occur in your kitchen or bathroom, drain stoppages can cause an extreme amount of annoyance and impede your daily routine. Though you should always call a plumber if you have an advanced issue, check out these ways to help make sure it doesn’t get to that point!

Block the Hair

Hair clogs occur when large amounts of hair tangles together in bathtub or shower drains, forming an immovable mass. Besides the annoyance and possible health risk of backed up water in your tub, this type of backup can cause major damage to your plumbing system. Fortunately, this is one variety of plumbing issue that can be prevented on your end.

Commercially- available hair catching inserts fit over shower drains to block the fibrous strands from entering your plumbing system. Clean the insert out regular basis to ensure the best results. If they get too full, they can stop up the tub as if your pipes were indeed clogged.

A good overnight soak of bleach in the drain can help as well! Use natural chlorine bleach, and try to avoid perfumed bleaches that just reduce the effectiveness. Pour one cup of bleach down the drain in the evening. Then in the morning, run a bit of water through the drain at first – then continue until the chlorinated smell goes away.

Kitchen Prevention

Avoid dumping cooking grease down the sink. Save it in an old coffee can, and put it in the trash once it cools. Similarly with coffee grounds and other organic compost, dispose of it in the trash, in your garden or in a backyard compost heap. Lastly, go easy on your sink-based garbage disposal – don’t depend on it to do all the work.

Boiling water can help reduce or prevent potential hair clots, if used at least once every month. Bring a large pot of water to a boil in the kitchen. Then use caution and oven mitts while bringing the pot to the drain. Pour slowly and gently. Adding baking soda before the water will also help keep the smell down, and vinegar can act similarly to the bleach in a more gentle form.
