Idraulico liquido: quando i fluidi non lo tagliano

Translating…

Modern day technology has brought with it numerous advances that have made normal life much easier. One good example of this is known amongst us common folk as “liquid plumber”. While there is a brand of the same name, the term refers to all plumbing fluids. However, there are times when these seemingly infallible fluids just can’t do the job. Working as plumbers, we see broken pipes, clogs of all sizes, and everything in between. But, one of the nastiest things we see is what happens when people use liquid plumbers incorrectly. So, in order to save you thousands and us our sanity, we put together a small guide of when it is and is not appropriate to flood your pipes with corrosive chemicals.

Hefty Clogs

One common misconception about liquid plumbers is that they clear clogs. They can clear some clogs, but only certain types. We all know, or at least we plumbers all know, that the large majority of clogs are caused by grime build-ups. Your basic grimy clog is a disgusting combination of hair and grease. Liquid plumbers are great for handling these, they just break down all the nastiness and flush it through the system. These clogs are recognizable because they are gradual. Your drain will slowly become more and more clogged as time goes by. Where it is dangerous to use liquid plumbers is when you have a sudden drain stop.

The reasons for these mega-clogs are numerous, but it is almost always a foreign body. It could also be tree roots, pipe breaks of some sort, or big objects that cannot be broken down by liquid plumbers. While strong, the corrosive liquids in that bottle cannot cut through anything. What tends to happen if you do pour liquid plumber into one of these clogs can be super damaging to your pipes. If the plumber just sits in your pipe, it can start to corrode your pipes, greatly reducing the lifespan on them (especially so if they have rubber components). Additionally, if your pipes are already weak, it can cause leaks, and you do not want that stuff in anywhere in your house uncontained. So take care when your sink is clogged and make sure that you are taking the correct measure.

Toilet Clogs

No one likes plunging toilets (we hope). However, sometimes it is necessary. What is not necessary, however, is to try to pour liquid plumber down your toilet. This simply does not work. In fact, it is ill-advised for two reasons. The first reason is that it will not do anything but make your existing toilet water even more horrific. The second is that the only method for getting it down there would be flushing. If it is a nasty clog, then you will end up with chemical-infused septic water on your floors, and that is a situation we really hate seeing. Do yourself a favor and familiarize yourself with your plunger, it will be your best friend in times of your most dire needs.

Dish Washers

This one is a doozy. A dishwasher has tons of little parts that work together within its draining system. A lot of these are made of easily corrodible materials (like rubber or plastic). Using any kind of liquid plumber drain cleaner on your dishwasher can very quickly corrode these parts and destroy (or at least disable) your dishwasher. Dishwasher clogs are much better avoided. Remember, your dishwasher will love you more if you scrape the scraps off your plate before putting the dishes in there.

Over-Use

A fairly common problem we see is caused by the over-use of liquid plumber products. While these are great fixes for many drains in despair, they should not be used continuously. If your drain is constantly clogging, look into why that could be. Are you pouring excess grease down your sink? Do you flush your hair after shaving? Are food scraps making it into your kitchen sink drain? All of these are very common things that people do that cause clogs. They are also very fixable. You can pour grease in a separate container, wipe the sink down after shaving but before rinsing, and put your food scraps in the trash.

Remember, do not shy away from using liquid plumbers; They are great products that really make dealing with some clogs and drain issues a snap. However, be aware of what is causing the clog or where the clog is. It can be really nasty / damaging / dangerous to be using liquid plumbers in the wrong situations. Read the instructions, consult the web, and know your appliances. When in doubt, call a plumber and ask, we are always around and love helping out. We hope you found this useful and happy plumbing!
