Check For Dishwasher Manufacturer Guides
If you are replacing a dishwasher, you may want to read about the energy efficiency of the new one you are about to purchase. Also, many manufacturers have a website that contains dishwasher installation guides and troubleshooting guides. You can do a search on Google to find your manufacturer. You will need to find your serial number and model number to look up your dishwasher on their site.
Dishwasher Drain Placement
When planning to install a dishwasher, or researching an already installed dishwasher, it’s better to plan the placement of the drain first. Also you possibly will need to plan on installing a Dishwasher Air Gap. For more information on installing a dishwasher and air gaps, please refer to the manufacturers Installation instructions and plumbing codes for your area.
Checking For Proper Installation
The drain hose should be attached to the bottom of the dishwasher with a hose clamp. This hose should route through the side of the cabinet towards the bottom. The opening should have the drain hose going through it going upward and attaching to the Air Gap. The hose should match the size of the air gap connection. From the Air Gap there is another hose that should go to an attachment on the sink drains, or it will attach to the side of a Garbage Disposal. If you see a leakage by any of the hose clamps, it is a good thing to take a screw driver and see if you can tighten the clamps a little. Be careful to not over tighten the clamps. This can cause the hose to have excessive wear and break down faster. Sometimes the dishwasher hose is a different size than the Garbage Disposal and there is a dishwasher boot that can be installed to make up the difference. The rest of the connections should not have a boot or other shim type devise.
Dishwasher Air Gap
The reason for a dishwasher Air Gap is to keep contaminated water from the sink from getting back into the dishwasher and causing contamination from overflow. If for some reason the sink drain was stopped up, and non-potable water was filling the sink, with the hose not connected to the Air Gap the contaminated water could get into the dishwasher.
Dishwasher Water Supply Line
The water supply line should be connected to your Hot Water Line under your sink and to the bottom of the dishwasher. It also should be routed through the hole in the side of the cabinet where the drain goes through. If you are installing a new dishwasher it is always a good thing to add an on / off valve for the dishwasher supply line.
