Pipes can be large, small, joined or straight. They can run horizontally or vertically and they can carry hot or cold water. Some are used to bring water in, some are used to transport water around and others are used to dispose of water in our homes. We would not have a plumbing system in our homes or offices without pipes, as they are the hidden water sources that we use every day.

Water, when it comes from the treatment plant and is ready for human use, comes into our homes via the mains. The mains run under the street in your neighborhood and branch off to each home. The water coming into your house is always cold, and will travel in wide pipes bringing your water through the water meter on the side of your home and will then branch off into hot and cold. The water that is to be hot will go directly to your hot water heater where it will be heated and then travel to the fixtures that need hot water around your house. The remaining water will stay cold, but both hot and cold water traveling around your house do so in copper pipes.

Copper pipes are the best choice for water traveling around your house. It is smooth and corrosion resistant and you can easily join it with solder. Using copper pipes keeps the water fresher and without a metal taste to it and means that it will travel effortlessly throughout your home. Copper piping leads to all of the water fixtures, even those that need both hot and cold feeds to operate. Things like the toilet only need cold water so there is no sense feeding hot water to this fixture. The bathroom has several fixtures that need both and these come together behind the scenes.

Water that has been used exits your home through a series of drains. All drains lead to the pipe that will take it out of your home and into the sewer system. This pipe is usually made of PVC plastic and is wider than the other pipes to take a higher volume of water through it. The sewer lines go under the ground and out of your neighborhood similar to how it came in in the first place. The sewer system leads the dirty water out while new clean water is coming in to start the cycle all over again.
