We’ve all tried to be the hero around the house and told our wives we can handle it. You know, the job around the house you do not want to hire someone to do. Kitchen plumbing is one of the things you might want to take out the checkbook and hire someone to do because it is actually quite complicated not to mention we’re talking about water in one of the most expensive rooms in your home. It is important to understand common plumbing of a kitchen before you try and fix or add something.

Here are a few kitchen plumbing basics to help you understand the difficulties that taking the doing it yourself approach may bring:

1.) The coolest plumbing layouts require tricky plumbing solutions. It seems these days everyone wants an island in their kitchen and better yet, how cool would it be to have a sink in that island right ?! If this is the case, the plumbing involved in adding an island to an existing kitchen can be tricky. You will need to run water pipes through your kitchen floor and tap them into an existing water line.

2.) Garbage disposals are a cheap way to home improvement. If you have a home without a garbage disposal you understand the inconvenience. A garbage disposal is a great way to improve a kitchen without spending a lot of money. If you go to a home improvement store you can find one for somewhere between $ 100 – 300 and the install isn’t very difficult either.

3.) Make sure to get your kitchen sink scoped regularly. If you do not have a garbage disposal, you will want to make sure you are not allowing food to collect in the drain. It is always a good idea to get your drain scoped regularly to make sure you will not end up with a wet floor.

4.) It is always a good idea to install a dishwasher next to your sink. Not only are all of your pipes conveniently under your sink, adding the dishwasher next to the sink makes it easy to load. A dishwasher is not that difficult to install if you have the right tools.

5.) Two main types of kitchen plumbing systems. The first type of plumbing you’ll find in a kitchen is called the drain-waste and vent system (DVW). There are two main pipes that make up the DVW; the vent pipes and drain pipes. These pipes make what is called the sink complex. The second is the water supply system which deals with the water from your outside source such as a well or a public water main.

6.) Shut off your water valve before doing any work. It is important to know where your main water shut off valve is in your home in case a pipe bursts or you want to make plumbing repairs. A main water shut off valve can usually be located outside near your water main. In addition to the main shut off valve, there will be other shut off valves in the plumbing that enters each room.
