Replacing fixtures can be a hefty job, especially if you have no training within the plumbing industry. Many homeowners have tried and failed at replacing fixtures like bathtubs or kitchen faucets, but there are still others who have succeeded.

If you have skills that make you pretty handy around the home, though, you may be able to do a job like replacing a faucet on your kitchen sink. Depending on your skill level, the project could take you anywhere from 30-90 minutes to complete.

Here are a few tips to help you through the process.

In order to prepare for the project, you must ensure that you have adjustable wrenches and slip-joint pliers on hand. You should also make sure you have a basin wrench and silicone caulk or plumber’s putty. Of course you should also have the new faucet as well.

There are also a few more things you can do to help the project run smoothly prior to beginning work. You should always clean out the cabinet under the sink for optimum efficiency. To block water from coming through the drain, you should block it with a washcloth, and make sure you keep a bucket around to catch any stray water that makes it through your washcloth blocker. Finally, make sure you have a pillow or pad placed at the edge of the cabinet so that when you lay under the sink your bank is not hurt by the end of the cabinet.

For safety reasons, you should make sure that any electrical outlets under the sink have no power running to them before removing the old faucet. Only after the new faucet is in place should the power be turned back on to an outlet underneath the sink.

Now that your work space is all prepared and you have all the materials you need, you are ready to begin the process of installing the new faucet. The first thing you should do is turn off all the water to this location. You can either use the shut off valves under the sink, or turn off the main water supply.

Next you can connect supply lines to the new faucet.

Steps three and four help hold the faucet in place. First put sealant on the base of the faucet and position the faucet in its place on the sink. Then you should screw on the mounting nuts underneath the sink.

Lastly you must attach the supply lines to the shut off valves.

If you do all of these things properly, you will have a beautiful, great working new faucet. If you feel uncomfortable with any of the preparation or steps to completion, just bring in a professional to do the job instead.
